Day 1: Arrival in FRA, transfer to BER, arrive hostel, check-in, go downtown, Brandenburg Gate, walk to Potsdamer Platz , past the Holocaust Memorial and sections of the Berlin Wall, Rittersport Store to make chocolate bars, Rittersport cafe for dinner, return to hostel, order pizza, de-brief, BED!
Day 2: Exploring Berlin. Activities include Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedächtnis Kirche , KuDamm and KaDeWe for shopping, take bus around town to the Museum Island , head to Alexanderplatz, where we will have coffee/cake at the top of the tower in the rotating restaurant for a lovely view of Berlin.
Day 3: East Berlin. End with guided tour of the Reichstag , the German parliament building.
Day 4: Potsdam and a visit to the Sanssouci palace built by Friederich the Great, return to Berlin, afternoon activities to be determined by students, dinner, evening activities at a Klettergarten (a type of high-ropes course).
Day 5: Check out of hotel, travel to the train station, 6 hour train ride to Munich, check in to hostel, walk through the old city to dinner at the Hofbrauhaus.

Day 6: Exploring Munich. After breakfast, we will walk downtown to the Marienplatz, where we will meet our guide for a 4 hour/4 mile bike tour of Munich, which will include lunch at a Biergarten. After this, we will spend some time shopping and exploring the Viktualienmarkt. The afternoon will be spent at the Deutsches Museum.
Day 7: Dachau. We will depart in the morning for the small town of Dachau, which is dually known for its concentration camp and as being a lovely artists' colony. After returning to Munich, we will have lunch, admire some of the downtown churches, including St. Peter’s, which offer a lovely view of the city from the tower, and the Frauenkirche, which provides Munich with its signature “onion towers” which define the skyline. After lunch, we will tour the Residenz palace, and head to Allianz Arena for a tour. Dinner will be in the city.
Day 8: Depart Munich for the 3 hour train trip to Freiberg am Neckar, where we will be greeted by our partner school. Students will spend their first evening with their German families.
The activities for the next 2 weeks are still being planned. Students will have school days interspersed with outings of the surrounding areas, including a trip to downtown Stuttgart to visit both Mercedes and Porsche. Other proposed activities are the Black Forest, Heidelberg (my German hometown, where I spent a year at the university), and other attractions.
Departure and return home:
July 7th - train from Freiberg am Neckar to Frankfurt airport.
Lufthansa Flight 442 FRA - DTW Departs 1:55pm, Arrives 5:00pm
Students can be picked up at baggage claim! They will be very tired - remember, to their bodies it will be 11pm when they arrive home. Jet lag coming home is worse than going there, and it will take their bodies about 6 days (1 day for every hour time difference) to return to local time.
